Movie trivia: runtimes and release years

Separate Japanese release years from runtimes and compare films in the available pool.

Know which release year is asked

The current movie collection covers 23 selected films from the Studio Ghibli catalogue. Its release-year metric uses the original Japanese release year. A later release in another country is not the year used for these current questions.

Older Daily sets and saved games can use the original starter collection, which uses US release years. Read the question and scope line instead of assuming that every movie round uses the same release definition.

Minutes and years are different targets

Current runtime questions use approximate studio-listed minutes. For a closest-pick target in minutes, compare each film’s runtime with that target; for a year target, compare release years. An estimate question asks you to type the value for one film.

In the current bank, The Boy and the Heron is listed at 124 minutes and 2023, while The Red Turtle is listed at 81 minutes and 2016. Use a fact as an anchor for the correct metric rather than treating a title as universally correct.

Play the offered pool

A closest-pick round is won by the nearest film in the available question pool, not necessarily the nearest film in the entire Ghibli catalogue. A target does not need an exact match; two equally close films both earn full points.

Search or select a title from the list. If the game does not recognise the name, the answer remains unlocked, and a timed clock continues while you correct it.

Review the source after answering

Use the round’s source button to see the relevant source and notes. Runtime listings can be approximate and release definitions differ, so check the listed scope before comparing a value with another edition.

At the end of a run, the round details under the scene preserve the submitted answer, recorded value and source where available.
